Muay Thai vs. Kickboxing: What's the Difference?
Radius Martial Arts Academy
If you're searching for striking classes in Fairfield County, you've probably seen both "Muay Thai" and "kickboxing" on gym schedules. They look similar — and many people use the terms interchangeably — but they're actually different disciplines with different rulesets, techniques, and training philosophies.
The Short Version
Muay Thai uses eight weapons: punches, kicks, elbows, and knees. Kickboxing typically uses four: punches and kicks. That distinction changes everything — from how you stand, to how you defend, to how you control distance in a fight.
Clinch Work
The biggest practical difference is the clinch. In Muay Thai, the clinch is a core part of the game — fighters use neck control, knee strikes, trips, and sweeps from close range. In most kickboxing rulesets, the clinch is broken up by the referee. This makes Muay Thai significantly more complete as a fighting system, especially for self-defense and MMA.
Why Radius Teaches Muay Thai
At Radius, our striking program is authentic Muay Thai — not cardio kickboxing or a diluted "kickboxing fitness" class. Led by Kru Tom Billinge, who trained and competed internationally (including in Thailand), our program teaches proper Thai technique, clinch work, pad work, and sparring strategy.
You'll learn to use all eight weapons, develop real defensive skills, and build the kind of striking ability that works in the ring, in the cage, and in life.
