Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about training at Radius Martial Arts Academy.
Getting Started
Do I need martial arts experience to start?
Not at all. The majority of our students started with zero experience. Every class at Radius includes a fundamentals component, and our instructors scale techniques to your level from day one. Whether you're 15 or 55, you can start here.
What is a free trial class?
Your first class at Radius is free — no commitment, no strings attached. We'll pair you with the right class for your goals, walk you through etiquette and expectations before you step on the mats, and make sure you feel comfortable throughout the session. Fill out the contact form or call (203) 240-0174 to schedule yours.
What should I bring to my first class?
Wear comfortable athletic clothing (a t-shirt and athletic shorts work fine). For BJJ classes, a rash guard and grappling shorts are ideal. We provide any equipment you'll need for your first class. Bring water and a towel.
What should I expect on my first day?
Arrive 10–15 minutes early. You'll meet the instructor, get a brief orientation, and join the class. Techniques will be demonstrated and practiced with a partner, and instructors actively help new students throughout. There's no pressure to spar or roll on your first day — everything is at your pace.
Programs & Training
What martial arts does Radius teach?
We offer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Gi and No-Gi under 10th Planet and Kore systems), Muay Thai, Mixed Martial Arts, Kids Martial Arts (ages 5–12), Competition Training, and Open Mat sessions.
What is 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu?
Radius is the only authorized 10th Planet school in Connecticut. 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu is a No-Gi grappling system founded by Eddie Bravo. It emphasizes innovative positions like the Rubber Guard, Lockdown, Truck, and Twister, and is designed specifically for No-Gi competition and MMA.
What's the difference between Gi and No-Gi BJJ?
Gi BJJ is practiced wearing a traditional Jiu-Jitsu uniform (the Gi), which allows for grips on the fabric and a more methodical style of grappling. No-Gi BJJ is practiced in rash guards and shorts, emphasizing speed, scrambles, and body control. At Radius, we teach both — Gi BJJ under the Kore system and No-Gi under the 10th Planet system.
Do you offer competition training?
Yes. Every Friday at 6:00 PM, we hold a dedicated competition training session led by Kurt Chase Patrick. These sessions focus on match strategy, takedowns, conditioning, and high-intensity live rounds. Our team competes in IBJJF, NAGA, Grappling Industries, and ADCC-rules events.
How often should I train?
For beginners, 2–3 times per week is an ideal starting point. Most dedicated students train 3–5 times per week. Consistency matters more than volume — showing up regularly will produce better results than occasional marathon sessions.
Kids Program
What ages do you accept for kids martial arts?
Our kids program is designed for ages 5–12. If your child is close to either end of that range, contact us and we'll help determine the best fit.
How is the kids program structured?
Kids alternate between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai every two weeks. This rotation keeps training engaging, develops well-rounded martial arts skills, and prevents burnout. Classes run Monday–Thursday from 5:00–5:45 PM.
Is martial arts safe for my child?
Yes. Safety is our top priority. All kids classes are structured, supervised, and age-appropriate. Contact is controlled, and students are paired by size and experience. Our instructors — including head kids coach Ryan Dunn — are experienced in working with children of all temperaments.
Will martial arts help with my child's behavior or focus?
Many parents tell us they notice improvements in focus, respect, and confidence within the first few weeks of training. The structured environment, clear expectations, and physical engagement of martial arts have a positive effect on behavior both on and off the mats.
