What Is 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu?

Travis Passaro

No-Gi grappling at Radius Martial Arts Academy in Fairfield, CT

If you've spent any time around Jiu-Jitsu — or even watched MMA — you've probably heard the name Eddie Bravo. His 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu system is one of the most talked-about innovations in grappling, and Radius Martial Arts Academy in Fairfield, CT is the only authorized 10th Planet school in Connecticut.

But what actually makes 10th Planet different? And why do students travel from across the state to train here?

A No-Gi System Built from Scratch

Most Jiu-Jitsu schools teach a curriculum that was developed for the Gi — the traditional uniform with a jacket and pants. When they teach No-Gi classes, they essentially remove the Gi and adapt the techniques. The problem? Many of those techniques rely on fabric grips that simply don't exist without the Gi.

10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu was built from the ground up as a No-Gi system. Every position, every transition, and every submission was designed to work without fabric grips. That's why it looks different, feels different, and — for many students — clicks in a way that traditional Jiu-Jitsu didn't.

Signature Positions

10th Planet is known for several unique positions that you won't find in traditional BJJ curricula:

  • Rubber Guard: A flexible closed guard system that controls your opponent's posture using your own legs, freeing your hands for attacks.
  • Lockdown: A half guard position that immobilizes your opponent's leg, creating sweeps and submissions from a position most people consider defensive.
  • Truck: A back control position that opens up the Twister, calf slicers, and other unorthodox submissions.
  • Twister: A spinal lock that's one of the most visually dramatic submissions in grappling — and uniquely effective in No-Gi.

Why It Matters for MMA and Self-Defense

Because 10th Planet was designed without the Gi, it translates directly to MMA and real-world self-defense scenarios. The positions and controls work against an opponent wearing any clothing — or none at all. That's one reason many MMA fighters train in the 10th Planet system.
