What to Expect at Your First BJJ Class
Travis Passaro
Walking into a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym for the first time can feel intimidating — even if you've been thinking about it for months. We hear it all the time: "I wanted to start, but I didn't know what to expect."
Here's the truth: every single person in our gym started exactly where you are right now. And at Radius, we've designed the new student experience so you never feel lost or overwhelmed.
What to Wear
For your first class, comfortable athletic clothing is all you need. A t-shirt and shorts work fine. If you're trying a Gi class, we'll make sure you have a loaner Gi available. For No-Gi, a rash guard and grappling shorts are ideal, but any fitted athletic wear works.
Avoid clothing with zippers, pockets, or hard buttons — they can catch fingers and toes during training.
What Happens When You Arrive
Plan to arrive 10–15 minutes early. You'll meet the instructor for that class, sign a brief waiver, and get a quick orientation: where to put your shoes, how the mats are laid out, and what the class structure looks like.
There's no spotlight on new students. You'll blend into the group, and the instructor will check in with you throughout.
The Class Structure
Every BJJ class at Radius follows the same format:
- Warm-up (5–10 min): Movement drills, hip escapes, basic positional movements. These are easy to follow and require no experience.
- Technique instruction (15–25 min): The instructor demonstrates 2–3 techniques. You'll pair up with a partner and drill each one with coaching help.
- Positional sparring (10–15 min): Short rounds from specific positions. This is where you start to feel how the techniques work in real time.
- Live rolling (optional): Full sparring rounds. As a beginner, this is always optional — and most instructors will actively pair you with an experienced partner who'll guide you through the round safely.
What You'll Feel After
Tired. Humbled. And very likely — excited to come back. Most new students walk out of their first class saying some version of: "That was harder than I expected, but way more fun."
BJJ is a physical puzzle, and the learning curve is steep at first. But that's also what makes it rewarding. Every class, you'll notice yourself getting a little sharper, a little calmer, and a lot more capable.
